Assignment 1: Revised Thesis Statement

By Saturday, June 20, 2015, post to the Discussion Area a revised thesis statement and an annotated bibliography containing a minimum of four scholarly sources.

At this point, you have received a good deal of feedback on your topic in general and on your thesis statement specifically. After completing your research proposal last module, you should have a solid vision of the argument you plan to make in your essay. Now, take all of that information and revise your thesis statement accordingly, incorporating any relevant feedback from your classmates and instructor as well as any new ideas or perspectives you’ve developed as you have delved further into your research.

In addition to your revised thesis statement, you will also post an annotated bibliography consisting of four scholarly sources. These four sources must be peer-reviewed and current. You may use sources you included in your tentative bibliography, or you may need to do further research to find new sources.

An annotated bibliography consists of a reference citation in APA format, followed by an annotation, or explanation, of how the source relates specifically to the thesis statement and supporting points. For the purpose of this assignment, your annotations should briefly summarize your source and explain exactly how the source will be used to support your thesis statement. Each annotation should be three to four sentences long. Below is an example of an annotated bibliography entry for one source:

By the end of the module, comment on at least two of your classmates’ submissions. Your replies to classmates should be made with the intent to expand, clarify, defend, and/or refine their thoughts. You may comment on the strength of your classmates’ thesis statements, the APA formatting of references, or the descriptions of how each source will be used to support the thesis statement. Always use constructive language, and avoid negative language. You should work toward a tone and spirit of intellectual curiosity and discovery.

Your responses to your peers’ writing should be a good paragraph in length and should include specifics from the text if you are attempting to make a point. Remember, any information you use from another source (including the class textbooks) must be accompanied with an APA formatted in-text citation and reference entry.

Before you begin to write your discussion answers, think about the points made in the lecture regarding answering discussion questions. All of your answers must be in complete sentence form, and you should avoid plagiarism at all costs by citing the readings correctly and composing your own original responses. Responses that copy ideas from the Internet or from another student will be considered plagiarism and will be treated as such.

Finance-mutual funds

Mutual funds can effectively charge ales fees in one of three ways: front-end load fees, 12b-1 (i.e. annual) fees, or deferred (i.e. back-end) load fees.  Assume that the SAS Fund offers its investors the choice of the following sales fee arrangements: (1) a 3% front-end load, (2) a 0.50 percent annual deduction, or (3) a 2 percent back-end load, paid at the liquidation of the investor’s position.  Also, assume that SAS Fund averages NAV growth of 12 percent per  year.

A. If you start with $100,000 in investment capital, calculate wha an investment in SAS would be worth in 3 years under each of the proposed sales fee schemes.  Which scheme would you choose?

B. If your investment horizon were 10 years, would your answer in part A change? Demonstrate why or why not.

C.  Explain the relationship between the timing of the sales charge and your investment horizon.  In general, if you intend to hold your position for a long time, which fee arrangement would you prefer?

Week 3 DB 2

Critical reading and writing relies on the development of intentional skills.  Critical reading requires that you drill down into the intention of the writer in order to discern the thoughts, ideas, feelings, and message the writer sought to convey.  When you read critically, you are able to engage more meaningfully to the material and better interpret text to make rich mental connections.

Critical reading is the bridge to help you develop your writing skills.  What you write for college courses needs to be accurate, logical, carefully reasoned, and thoughtfully crafted.  College-level writing is more structured and formal than most of your daily writing. For example, writing a paper for this class follows a much different process than writing an e-mail or text message to your best friend.

All four Learning Patterns contribute to excellent writing and you will need to focus on those Patterns you Avoid as strongly as those you Use First. Practice the critical reading strategies in Chapter 3 and deeply read the stories of Makayla, John, Paul, and Raheem in Section 3.3. (Using your Learning Patterns to Master Critical Writing).

  1. For each of the four learners, provide two to three sentences of advice for how they could have field-fitted their Learning Patterns for their specific situation.  For example, Makayla was ruled by her Sequence.  What would you recommend that she do to overcome her overdependence on Sequence when approaching writing tasks?
  2. Considering the stories of the learners from Chapter 3 and reflecting on your own unique Learning Patterns, what challenges may you experience as you approach college-level reading and writing assignments?  Identify at least three strategies that you read about in Chapter 3 or the Instructor Guidance that can help you overcome these challenges.

Your initial post should contain a minimum of 250 words.

Response to Peers:  Review your classmates’ posts and respond to at least two, each with a minimum of 50 words.  Compare and contrast how your Learning Patterns influence your approach to college-level writing assignments with your peer.  Provide suggestions for how they can better field-fit their Learning Patterns when approaching written assignments.

This discussion is asking you to do four things:

  1. Read the four learner stories from section 3.3 of Chapter 3.  Provide advice to each learner that could have helped them “field-fit” their Patterns more successfully (part a).
  2. Reflect on and explain challenges you may face (based on your Learning Patterns) as you approach college-level reading and writing assignments (part b).
  3. List three strategies you read about in Chapter 3 or the Instructor Guidance that could help you overcome challenges (part b).
  4. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ discussion posts.  Use the “Response to Peers” to assist you with your reply.

Type a heading for each section (e.g., My Advice for Makayla, John, Paul, and Raheem), and then write the information under each heading in complete sentences. This helps the reader quickly identify each section and helps you know that you have covered all of the requirements for this post.
