TIP/CLARIFICATION

For this assignment, you have two criteria to meet in preparing your essay.  You must research and report on –

1) A health issue that affects a unique population

in a

2)specific region of the United States

For example:

· HIV or AIDS in African-Americans in Southern United States

· Alcoholism in Native Americans in Midwestern United States

· Diabetes among Navajo people in Southwest United States

· Obesity among low-income children in Eastern United States

If you choose a topic other than one of these (listed above), I strongly recommend that you contact me for approval before conducting your research and writing your paper.

You must demonstrate your ability to conduct research on a regional area of the country.

Remember that you must choose only one public health (1) topic.

You must conduct research of the specific geographical area of the country that correlates to your selected public health topic.  Consider using sources such as the U.S. Census Bureau, Department of Health web sites for various states, the CDC, etc. In addition, you may type the region and the public health topic in your search engine as discussed below.

Remember that you must reflect on the health issue as it applies to the specific population within the specified geographical region of the United States.

A region of the United States means several contiguous states within a specific region of the United States…not just one state.  For example, Southwestern United States includes the states of Arizona, New Mexico, some parts of Texas and Nevada, etc.

Type the region of interest (e.g. “Southern United States HIV or Child Obesity in Eastern United) in your search engine, and you should receive several “hits” that will lead you to the information that will help determine the states within the region of interest.

If your paper does not address both components of the assignment, it will not be compliant and you will lose substantial points.

The report should consist of 7 -10 pages (exclusive of the title and reference pages).  To avoid point loss, please do not compose less than seven (7) pages or more than 10 pages (exclusive of the title and reference pages).

Please compose an introductory paragraph (that provides brief background and sets forth the thesis of the paper) and a concluding paragraph (that summarizes the key points you have intended to convey and brings the paper to closure).

Write in academic tone (avoid conversational tone; write in the third person; omit personal experiences and references). Avoid first person (I, we, our) and second person (you, your).

The paper must address the following requirements:

· The main issues being discussed and the message you wish to deliver to the affected population.

· Insight and statistical data on the population affected.

· Age, gender, race, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation, religion, etc. of the target population.

· Segment of the United States population affected along with the percentage.

· Social factors such as culture and religion that may influence the burden of the disease.

· Ethical issues that may be factors in developing and implementing prevention and intervention programs for the disease.

· Various components of the health care system that can assist the community.

· Methods that the health care system should use to assist the community. (For example, state health care systems may revise or develop new policies to address the issue).

Support your responses with examples.

Include in-text references in the body of the paper and include a reference list at the end of the document on a separate page.  You must support your thoughts and ideas with references.  Avoid the tendency to speculate on unsubstantiated opinions.  Remember that you must support your assertions with research when writing an academic/research paper.  Remember that the objective of the paper is to analyze and report on your research.  In-text citations and references must be formatted consistent with the APA guidelines.

Ensure that your similarity score is within the green range.  Papers with high similarity score are subject to rejection and/or a grade of zero (0).
