THE LIBRARY HAVE THE MEANS TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER, TO CREATE A PLACE NOT JUST A FACILITY, TO MAINTAIN A SECURE ENVIRONMENT, AND TO BE EASY TO ACCESS IN MORE THAN ONE WAY?
The Space of the Oviatt Library
California State University, Northridge is one of the largest universities in the state of California; it holds a large sum of student, from different backgrounds and different ethnicities. On the first day at CSUN, I was amazed by how big the campus is and I was worried about getting from class to class. As I was exploring the area and searching the buildings I was going to be in, I was astonished by one of the buildings, the Oviatt Library. It is bigger than the one in my old campus and it looks like a Greek building. The library have the means to bring people together, to create a place not just a facility, to maintain a secure environment, and to be easy to access in more than one way?
The Oviatt Library is located in the middle of campus with its building architecture that resembles power and wisdom, as it looks like a Greek building, with its square sides with long poles, and long stairway. Each building that surrounds it with different majors has a walk way towards it. By that it brings student from different majors into one place to gather, to study, to get help, and to have information. That being said, it creates a place of people being together with different ideas, as I asked a student who currently studying business, ” Does the library bring student into one place and have different ideas and information?”, Mohammad Alotaibi answered: ” The library is a huge building with lots of information for students to get and each student needs to come to the library for a reason, so yes it brings students into one place with different ideas”. Which brings us to Jay Walljasper when he wrote that presedent Fred Kent when he said that: “We need cross-fertilization and collaboration more than ever”, by that he means that we must bring students out of there separate buildings with all kinds of majors into a place where they can be of use to one another and not to be in a stand sill place.
As you approach the library you will see that it has four levels and an underground level, each one of these levels has a purpose. The garden level you will find that it has about 22 rooms for the faculty and graduate students. As Walljasper said: “This simply means clustering activities together to create a busy, dynamic place for many different types of people at different times of day.”, by that each room at the garden level has a purpose not only for students but also for faculty; like technology centers, archive rooms, laboratories, and faculty rooms, and rooms that professors use to give lectures in like “University 100″ which one of my friends took in his freshman year.
And for the main floor you will find the that it has a coffee shop which was weird for me when I saw it at first but then I found it very useful to have since students have to be in the library o study and use it as much as they can and they get tired, like my friend did when I asked him about the coffee shop being in the library Bader Alyousef answered ” It’s good to have the coffee shop in the library since I go a lot to it and don have the time to eat or go out to the cafeteria which is located in the bookstore or go to the back of the library to eat or have a cup of coffee while I study”. Other than the main floor having a coffee shop it has computer instruction labs in each side, printers, a guest service area, about 11 learning commons, and its well-furnished ” the design of the space, maintenance, access, and levels of activity in order to create an environment in which people feel secure.”(Web) And which brings us to triangulation It’s the building that brings students from all different majors into one place, to study, to interact, and to gather information and stay in that place for more than 15 minutes and that makes it a place that has a good triangulation “One test of how well a place triangulates is to evaluate how long the typical person stays there. If most people stay in a public place for 15 minutes” (Walljasper, Jay), and that is a good thing to have to make it a successful place.
As for the second floor you will find that is has 18 study rooms, book shelves in the middle and on each side with best sellers, 2 staff areas, a service desk, and music and media lecture rooms. What amazes me about the second floor is that it has a big amount of books for different majors and its well organized and quiet, which is good if a student what’s his alone or a quiet place to be in to concentrate.
And for the third floor which is completely different from the other floors with its book shelves, noise and a student learning resource center which helps students in every way it can, and to be in the LRC to get help each student needs to make an appointment to have the chance to get with an LRC staff member. I asked Bader Alyousef ” Which floor do you use the most to get help on your homework?”, he answered: ” I got to the third floor since it has an LRC which helps a lot and I get the most useful help that I can from each LTC staff member that is helping me.” The third floor is one of the busiest floors in the library with its LRC.
Lastly the fourth floor, I don’t think that it has the popularity of the other floors since most of the time when I go up there I would see one or two students going in and out each book shelve looking for the book they want maybe it’s my timing. Since it has a wide range of books and book shelves, and 26 study rooms ten of them are graduate study rooms eight group study rooms and also eight study rooms for undergraduate and graduate students to use, a staff area, and a longue area.
